Before I share with you my list of my favourite Internet tools that almost certainly assist you to work remotely, I want to write about one more issue related to self management and especially to do with maintaining your focus and levels of concentration

The latest version of Skype has a ton of very practical features and there is an ever growing list of practical add on applications.

I have been operating remotely for nearly 8 yrs since I first discovered Quickbooks online an ‘on demand’ small business accounting software service and was spellbound by the fact that if you can do accounting online then why shouldn’t you be able to perform other important types of work remotely?

Whilst working remotely has many benefits there are numerous traps that people easily fall into which convert into problems that cause decreased productivity and lower motivation. Before I began working remotely I used to receive well over two hundred electronic mails every 24 hours. Now I think I am unfortunate if I receive over four. I also set up an automatic response that swiftly told anyone sending me mail at what time of day I would be processing mail and if an e-mail needed my urgent consideration to mark it as ‘Urgent’.

Disable every function that can send you a interruption. This includes cell and
conventional telephones and types of alerts from e-mail such as on screen pop ups, audible warnings, screen changes to your inbox folder and of course facing a window. Get a door on your office and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.

Obviously not everyone can work remotely as many types of employment require people to be at their office or travel to perform their tasks in person. But for those of us given the opportunity to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and give some practical directions by writing and publishing it on the web in the hope that I could give others useful ways for adapting to remote working or managing remote workers.

I would caution you that there are many people on the net who will try and sell you guides for enormous sums of cash, take my word for it you don’t need to do this.

I am fortunate to be permitted to work wherever I choose and just about everyone who asks me what I do for a living wants to know how I am able to work remotely. Don’t be fooled here I am still perfecting the art of remote working as all of the time I encounter people online who tell me about new ways and I am repeatedly unearthing new software and ways that make my life simpler and increase my productivity.

In the past 7 years I have slowly but surely adapted my working methods to allow me to do the majority of my work remotely with a kit of web tools and unfaltering self management. One afternoon whilst exploring the net I uncovered Quickbooks online and this brought to my attention what just might be possible. My discovery of online ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a ‘light bulb’ moment for me and the start of my ‘remote working career.

This approach is ideally suited to situations where you are individually targeting market. The one objective you should be constantly pursuing is the creation of a list that you can converse with and sell product to.. Treat the people on your list well and they will tell you their needs to which you can match and your content products. The more people on your list the more consulting and information marketing opportunities you will uncover. When doing a business trip, how can you incorporate vacation?

  • Get there early. The simplest and most obvious way is to get to the event a couple of days early and do some sightseeing before doing any business.
